Recognise the problem
When a few ants become a recurring problem
An occasional ant outdoors is different from a trail that returns to your kitchen every day. Note where the activity starts, how often it returns and which rooms or outdoor areas are affected.
Trails around food and water
Look for repeated activity near pantry shelves, bins, pet bowls and sinks. Ants recruit other workers to food sources, so numbers can rise quickly after a discovery.
Ants coming through the same gap
Make a note of activity around window frames, skirting boards and wall fittings. The point where ants appear is a useful inspection clue; it does not necessarily mark the nest.
Activity around paving and garden edges
Ants can nest in soil and existing spaces around buildings. Loose soil around paving or pots may be worth checking, but a mound alone cannot identify the species.
What to tell us when you enquire
Include your suburb, property type, where the ants appear, how long the problem has been happening and any treatments already tried. You do not need to identify the species before contacting us.

The ants you see are part of a bigger colony.
Clearing a trail can tidy up the immediate problem. Lasting control depends on what is happening beyond that surface.
A food source can keep attracting workers
Ant species have different food preferences, including sweet, fatty and protein-rich foods. Water can also attract them, particularly during dry conditions. A clean home can still have accessible food, moisture or entry points.
The nest may be out of sight
Ants are social insects with workers and one or more queens. Depending on the species, a colony may occupy soil or existing cavities. Treating visible workers alone may leave the colony active.
One treatment method does not suit every ant
Bait selection depends on the species and feeding behaviour. Surface treatments and baits serve different purposes; your technician explains which approach is appropriate for the activity at your property.

What happens at your ant treatment
We check where the ants are active, explain the treatment and confirm the price before starting. Here is what to expect from the visit.
Inspect and discuss the history
Show us the rooms, trails and outdoor areas where you have noticed ants. We inspect accessible areas, assess the ant activity and discuss previous treatments, access restrictions and concerns about the property.
Confirm the scope and price
We explain the proposed treatment areas, the method and any preparation or access requirements before work begins. Tell us about children, pets, aquariums and food-handling areas so these can be considered in planning the service.
Apply a targeted treatment
Depending on the assessment, treatment may involve ant baits, a suitable non-repellent application or treatment directed at accessible nesting areas. Baits are intended to be collected by workers and shared through the colony; results depend on feeding and placement.
Provide the service report and aftercare
Your digital report records the service and recommendations. We explain what activity to watch for, which treated areas to leave undisturbed and when to contact us if the problem persists. Any follow-up arrangements are confirmed for your service.
Identification matters
“Black ants” and “brown ants” are only a starting description.
Colour alone is not enough to identify an ant. These examples show why appearance, location and behaviour matter. They are an introduction, not a diagnosis from a photograph.
Black house ants
Small, dark ants that may nest around structures or in building cavities. They feed on several foods, including sweets. Persistent indoor trails warrant checking both the feeding area and entry route.
Coastal brown ants
Colonies have small workers and larger, big-headed soldiers. Activity may occur around paths, rockeries and wall spaces. Calling an ant “brown” does not confirm it is this species.
Green-head ants
These ants have a metallic green to purplish sheen and often nest in soil or beneath wood. They can deliver a painful sting. Keep your distance from active nesting areas.

Before & after treatment
Know what to prepare and what to leave alone.
Your technician’s directions take priority for the products and areas treated. Ask for clarification before cleaning treated surfaces or adding another pest product.
Before your appointment
- Note the location and time of recurring activity so you can show your technician.
- Tell us the names of any ant sprays or baits already used and where you applied them.
- Store exposed food, put away utensils and clear access to the affected areas as directed.
- Discuss arrangements for children and animals, including pets that use outdoor treatment areas.
- Let us know about locked gates, tenancy access or business operating hours when booking.
After your appointment
- Follow the advised access and re-entry instructions for each treated area.
- Leave placed baits and stations in position unless your technician tells you otherwise.
- Avoid applying household insecticide sprays around a baiting program; ask us before adding a product.
- Record where activity continues so we can compare it with the original problem.
- Contact us at the review point discussed, or sooner if you are concerned about the treatment.
How long does ant treatment take to work?
Baiting is not an instant knockdown treatment. Workers need time to find and feed on it; colony control can take several weeks. Your technician will discuss a monitoring period suited to the method used. Continued activity should be assessed in that context, rather than covered with extra spray.
Reduce the reasons ants return
Small changes that support treatment
Store food in sealed containers, clear spills and crumbs, and remove leftover pet food. Address leaking taps and avoid leaving food waste in open bins. Ask your technician which entry gaps are worth sealing and when to do it around the treatment.

Your general pest package may cover certain common ants, but that does not mean every ant species or nesting situation is included. Tell us about the infestation before booking so we can confirm the scope and whether targeted treatment is needed.
Will you need to find or remove the nest?
An accessible nesting area can help guide treatment, but nests are not always visible or reachable. A suitable baiting approach may be used where direct access is limited. Excavating or physically removing a nest is not automatically part of an ant service.
Do I need to leave during treatment?
That depends on the application and the areas being treated. We explain any exclusion period, drying time and re-entry instructions before work begins. Let us know about children, pets and other household requirements when arranging the service.
Is there a Pest Free Warranty?
Where your ant service includes a Pest Free Warranty, the covered ants, period and return-visit conditions are set out in your service agreement. Ask us to confirm these before booking, including whether outdoor activity and any follow-up visits are covered.
Can you offer an urgent ant appointment?
Call 1300 4 DEBUG with your suburb and a description of the problem. We will check the available appointment times. If you suspect fire ants, use the official reporting process above immediately rather than waiting for a routine booking.
Are flying ants the same as termites?
No. Ant colonies can produce winged reproductive ants, while termites are a different group of insects. If you are unsure what you have found, ask for identification instead of assuming a general ant treatment is suitable. See our termite inspection information if termites are suspected.
Do you need to treat every ant in the garden?
Not necessarily. Ants have useful ecological roles, and ordinary outdoor activity is not the same as an infestation inside the home. We discuss the areas causing concern and the practical treatment scope. Suspected fire ants require the separate reporting process.
